Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton
The Manipulator
I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don’t affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He’s always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.
The Shadow
I didn’t mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can’t stay away.
I’m mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses…
I’ll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I’ll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.
While not required, it is highly suggested to read the novella, Satan’s Affair, first.

The premise is quite interesting. This book was also recommended to me by communities online for the ruthless heroine and excellent smut. Check it out!
Erika
I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist. My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He’s handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…
For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away. Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael.
He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college. In my city. Unprotected.
The opportunity is too good to be true, as well as the timing.
Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
Uh Penelope Douglass’s books definitely have problems, including problematic taboos to risky dynamics. But one thing that is undeniable is that no matter what, the quality of the smut is always consistent. So if you don’t mind the toxic relationships and weird couple combos that sometimes occur, you can give it a try. Notably, though people defending her books have claimed these taboo and toxic aspects make the smut even more exciting, and are her “secret sauce” to spicy smut. You can make the judgements yourself. This same commentary applies to another one of her books below (cue the romance between the dad’s friend and the dad’s daughter).
The Sweetest Oblivion by Danielle Lori
She’s a romantic at heart, living in the most unromantic of worlds . . .
Nicknamed Sweet Abelli for her docile nature, Elena smiles on cue and has a charming response for everything. She’s the favored daughter, the perfect mafia principessa . . . or was. Now, all she can see in the mirror’s reflection is blood staining her hands like crimson paint.
They say first impressions are everything . . .
In the murky waters of New York’s underworld, Elena’s sister is arranged to marry Nicolas Russo. A made man, a boss, a cheat—even measured against mafia standards. His reputation stretches far and wide and is darker than his black suits and ties.
After his and Elena’s first encounter ends with an accidental glare on her part, she realizes he’s just as rude as he is handsome. She doesn’t like the man or anything he stands for, though that doesn’t stop her heart from pattering like rain against glass when he’s near, nor the shiver that ghosts down her spine at the sound of his voice.
And he’s always near.
Telling her what to do.
Making her feel hotter than any future brother-in-law should.
Elena may be the Sweet Abelli on the outside, but she’s beginning to learn she has a taste for the darkness, for rough hands, cigarettes, and whiskey-colored eyes.
Having already escaped one scandal, however, she can hardly afford to be swept up in another. Besides, even if he were hers, everyone knows you don’t fall in love with a Made Man . . . right?
This is a standalone forbidden romance (with plenty of steam and angst.)
A mafia angsty enemies-to-lovers romance with a jealous and possessive MMC and the forbidden romance trope. May or may not have set someone on fire after they groped the FMC. Also has a lot of smut!
Credence by Penelope Douglass
Cues the romance between a girl, her dad’s friend (uncle), and her uncle’s sons.
She’d better run…
Posy
When I fell for Dario Volpe, I thought he was Prince Charming, and I was the luckiest girl alive. He didn’t care about my past. The talk. The stain on my family’s reputation.
Then he saw something I never wanted anyone to see.
He cares now.
This isn’t a breakup, it’s a warning shot, and if I want to get out of this bad romance alive, I have to run and never look back.
Dario Volpe is no storybook hero. He’s a psychopath, and he can’t decide–kiss me? Or kill me?
Dario
I’m the man behind the curtain, the power behind the throne. I could have killed her, and no one would have blinked an eye. Posy Santoro isn’t exactly a mafia princess.
No one sees her as clearly as I can–the perfect mind hidden by that knockout body in the tight dress.
I made a mistake, running her off, but now I get to play one of my favorite games.
Posy can run, but she isn’t made to be free. She’s made for me. And when I catch her? Game over.
Run Posy Run is a standalone mafia romance with dark elements. Intended for adult readers.
HEA guaranteed.
This is a book with the cat-and-mouse trope, and one thing I really liked about this book is it has a very smart and capable heroine! Recommend for readers who are interested in more mafia/crime mature smut.
A series of mafia romances (each one is a standalone). The MMC is so possessive it’s almost comedic. In this book, it ended up being if she moves to a different floor of the same building the FMC has to phone the MMC. She does that every 30 minutes at intervals because he can’t bear to be without her.
Haunting Adeline Review
I would recommend this book if you enjoy the following tropes:
Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton is undeniably one of the darkest books I have ever come across, and it’s a real hit or miss for readers. This book delves into the depths of dark romance, and if you’re not fully on board with this subgenre, you will most likely not enjoy it at all. The stalker romance trope is prominent in the story, adding a chilling and intense layer to the plot. I would recommend this book only to those who are seasoned in the world of dark romance and are seeking the darkest of the dark.
Interestingly, Haunting Adeline had previously been banned on Amazon, which speaks to the extremes this book goes to in its exploration of the genre. Personally, I went into it with a clear understanding of what to expect, purely out of curiosity for the genre. It’s essential to manage your expectations when approaching this book, as it will directly impact your enjoyment of it. If you’re ready for a rollercoaster ride of intense emotions, psychological twists, and hauntingly dark themes, then Haunting Adeline might be the perfect book for you. But proceed with caution, as this is not your typical romance, and it will challenge your comfort zone like never before.
